Dirty Secrets of Archive Gold DVD-R discs:
The NEW Fool's Gold?

Won't a "gold" archive DVD-R protect me? NOPE!

News: Archive gold type DVD-R discs have the same "dyes" as any other premium DVD discs.

There are 3 reasons it is IMPOSSIBLE for ANY -- even an "archive gold" type -- DVD-R to GO THE DISTANCE.

1) DVD manufactures have an escape clause on EVERY DVD disc made -- because the NIST/LC Study on Optical Discs states that, "..there is no guarantee that the (DVD / CD) recorder used to burn a (DVD / CD) disc is fully compatible with that (DVD / CD) disc. This can, and often does, lead to very high (DVD / CD) error rates immediately after recording the (DVD / CD) disc, "

The warranty of the DVD manufacturing industry -- on gold DVD discs -- is actually an escape clause -- that may read something like this:

IF YOUR "DVD RECORDING PROCESS" MESSES-UP OUR DVD DISC (which it will) ALL WARRANTIES ARE NULL AND VOID.
WE WARRANTY OUR DISC -- NOT YOUR DATA.

2) DVD PLAYERS will never go the distance!
To "play" a DVD -- you need a DVD player! DVD PLAYERS and DVD DISCS as a medium are "going away -- NOW -- just like CD Music Discs, and CD stores, and CD players. The technology shift FROM DVD PLAYER -- TO INTERNET is in full swing. You can NOW "buy" DVD movies via the internet -- or just" Subscribe" -- to as many as you can EVER WATCH -- (like NetFlix).

Where will you find a DVD PLAYER -- that works -- in 10 years? 100 years? To test your "archive gold DVD discs?

3) Given both the ESCAPE CLAUSE ABOVE, and the SHRINKING DVD PLAYER AND DISC MARKET ABOVE, DVD disc manufactures are in the death throes of their products. They can promise anything -- and THEY DO -- because there will be no mechanism -- NO DVD players -- for accountability in 100 years!.

Memory Quip: Dye is for data; Metal is for Marketing.

But for those of you that have money to burn...you can burn GOLD DVD discs!

------------------------------------------------------------------
GOLD DISC, M-Disc, M-DVD
------------------------------------------------------------------
WE WILL SELL YOU KODAK, MAM-A DVD-R GOLD DISCS OR ANY OTHER GOLD DISC UPON REQUEST,
AND WE WILL ADD THE SIGNIFICANTLY EXTRA COST TO YOUR FINAL TOTAL;
OR WITH THE TUTORIAL WE GIVE YOU, YOU CAN JUST "BURN YOUR OWN!";

HOWEVER,

We do NOT "back claims behind GOLD DVD-R discs" -- but rather "we challenge them”.

The National Archives do NOT give DVD-R Gold discs ANY “special exception” for exceptional longevity.

In 5 to 10 years, DVD players and Blu-ray players will be like CD players – relics of the “disc-age”.

Our “Device-FREE™” DVD and Device-FREE™Blu-ray “Disc-IMAGE™” products – spread around your family – on many different media -- will give you centuries more security that ANY Physical disc – that requires a “physical disc player”.

BUT -- If you just want “gold” discs -- just because you always get what you want -- then that is perfectly fine with us.

MEMORY QUIP: BURNING GOLD WILL COST YOU MORE – but it may NOT BUY YOU MORE!

NOTE: You MUST store 2 DVD-Players WITH your “2 x Millennium discs” – to have a “true archive”.

M-Disc by Extreme Tech is the ONLY “longevity” disc we might consider “NOT HYPE”.
Data is burned into a “stone layer” – not dye -- so they claim.

HOWEVER, the M-Disc is a Blu-ray (BD-R), not a DVD-R -- per their first announcement of the product. If that is the case, then you MUST store 2 Blu-ray Players WITH 2 of your duplicate “ Millennium discs” – to have a “true archive”.

Again, Blu-ray players are going away, in favor of “Internet steaming video” and “solid state” technology.
Again, a few Device-FREE™Blu-ray Disc-IMAGES™, spread around the family, will offer "more security – for free"

Dirty Little Secret™ about “archive” GOLD DVD-R Discs -- THE REAL DIRT IN THE SECRET!

Video d ata is stored in the “layers of dye” – not the “layers of “gold metal alloy foil layer” on the DVD-R. A GOLD DVD-R has the SAME DYE as any other premium DVD-R discs – of any other alloy metallic color.

In fact, ‘GOLD DISCS” are not even acknowledged in DVD-R “longevity studies” -- as having any significance over any other metal alloyed layers -- in any discs tested.

NOTE: Gold WAS considered in other types of “non-DVD-R discs” -- like "Movie DVD discs" -- with mixed results -- that -- once again -- do challenge manufacture's claims.

Gold -- the darker metal -- absorbs HEAT worse that Silver colored met als -- heating up the "dye layer" that stores YOUR DATA. Set 2 discs -- one gold colored and one silver colored -- on the dashboard of your car for 2 hours in direct sun light. Which one will you bet on "to win"?

There are NO REGULATIONS or STANDARDS for a 'GOLD STANDARD DVD-R" .
A manufacturer can mix a few molecules of 99.99% PURE 24 Karat GOLD into their GOLD COLORED FOIL -- just like gold foil candy bar wrappers.

Then they can legally claim they "USE" (some) 99.99% PURE 24 karat GOLD in their foil.

NOTICE: In the case of Gold Candy Bar wrappers and DVD-R discs:
They do NOT say. "the Entire Metallic LAYER is make of 99.99% PURE 24 Karat GOLD".
They do NOT say, "the Entire 'Metallic Alloyed LAYER is ELECTRO-PLATTED with 99.99% PURE 24 Karat GOLD".
But, no doubt, they do "USE" (some) 99.99% PURE 24 Karat GOLD!

Companies selling GOLD FOIL discs, sell them as "archive quality" -- but those same companies
ALSO SELL SILVER COLORED discs -- as "lasting up to 10, 25, or 50 years” – which is the bulk of their sales.

Despite these “marketing claims”, US National Archives do NOT favor these disc in any way; but rather seem to “lump them in, with ALL DVD-R discs – as ONLY GOOD – 2 years for DATA, 5 years for images.

REFERENCE: National Archives: FAQ 6. How long can I expect my recorded CDs/DVDs to last?

To read for yourself what the National Archives say, click DVD-R Longevity -- also in the side bar menu (at any time).

FINAL NOTE: Companies making great claims of extraordinary longevity, Kodak and MAM-A, are now allegedly reported to be “re-sellers” – no longer manufactures -- of DVD-R GOLD disc. If they do not have manufacturing control over these discs, we must question these claims.

By the way, ALL DVD manufactures KNOW that ALL DVD discs are "going away". They can "claim" what they want NOW, knowing they will never be held accountable LATER -- in the absence of DVD PLAYER technology.

Final Note: In order to have a TRUE DVD ARCHIVE, you MUST store your DVD disc with a DVD Player. However, there is a problem. The rubber rollers in you DVD Player will "rot" and the metal in your DVD player will "rust" within 10 years.

A FEW QUIPS TO HELP YOU REMEMBER:

For "Recordable" DVD discs:

"Data dies in the dye -- long before the metal matters!"™

"Dye is for DATA; Metal is for MARKETING"™

"YOU may BUY the gold; but YOUR DATA PAYS for the dye (die)!" ™
